Care & Instruction

At Holt London, our garments and accessories are crafted with care from premium materials. To ensure your items maintain their shape, color, and texture for years to come, we recommend following these specialized care guidelines.

1. General Fabric Care Guidelines

Always check the care label stitched inside your garment for specific material compositions and instructions. For general fabric types, use the following best practices:

  • Delicate Knits & Woven Fabrics: Hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent, or machine wash on a delicate/hand-wash cycle inside a mesh laundry bag.
  • Cotton & Linen Blends: Machine wash cold with similar colors. Tumble dry on low heat, or line dry to minimize natural shrinkage.
  • Synthetic Blends (Polyester, Rayon, Viscose): Wash in cool water. Viscose and rayon can shrink or warp when exposed to high heat, so line drying is highly recommended.

2. Washing Best Practices

To keep your garments looking vibrant and new, follow these everyday laundry habits:

  • Turn Inside Out: Always turn garments inside out before washing to protect the face of the fabric, prints, or delicate stitching from friction.
  • Cold Water is Best: Washing at 30°C (85°F) or below preserves garment fibers, prevents shrinking, and protects rich colors from bleeding or fading. It’s also better for the environment!
  • Separate Colors: Group your laundry by color (whites, lights, and darks) to prevent dye transfer.

3. Drying & Shaping

How you dry your clothing dictates how well it maintains its original silhouette.

  • Air Dry Safely: Lay delicate items, structured dresses, and heavy knits flat on a clean towel or a drying rack. Hanging heavy, wet garments can stretch out the shoulders and warp the fit.
  • Avoid High Heat: Traditional tumble dryers can degrade fibers and elastic over time. If you must use a dryer, choose a low-heat or air-fluff setting.
  • Keep Out of Direct Sun: When line-drying outdoors, keep bright and dark items out of direct, intense sunlight to avoid UV bleaching.

4. Ironing & Steaming

  • Steaming (Recommended): A garment steamer is the gentlest way to remove wrinkles from dresses, delicate fabrics, and lightweight blends without risking scorch marks.
  • Ironing: If using an iron, select the correct heat setting for the fabric type (e.g., low for synthetics, medium for cotton). Iron the garment inside out, or use a clean pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric to prevent a "shiny" residue.

5. Storage

  • Hanging vs. Folding: Hang structured items, lightweight dresses, and outerwear on padded or wooden hangers. Fold heavy sweaters, knitwear, and t-shirts to prevent them from stretching out on a hanger.
  • Environment: Store your wardrobe in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space away from direct sunlight and moisture.
